improve your writing by donating your time & energy
Your best lesson, epiphany, or opportunity may lie just around the corner. Work in the trenches alongside other publishing professionals and see all that happens. Offer up your talents, in person or by email, and learn in the process. Opportunities abound. Work as much or as little as you like. There are spots to fit your schedule and locale. You can do such things as:
Write copy for a writers conference.
Work social media for a writers conference or workshop: Post pre-conference info, post live during a conference, post follow-ups, and share other's posts.
Edit a writers newsletter.
Volunteer at a writers conference.
Design or maintain a conference website.
Work at a literary agency in an internship or externship (long distance).
Photograph a writers conference.
Drive conference speakers to & from the airport.
Host conference speakers in your home.
What can you imagine for yourself?
Put yourself out there and just see what comes bouncing back. Especially when it comes to sharing information, writers are an incredibly generous community.
Each of us shares with writers regularly by donating our time and energy. But we also support writers with money, and you can, too. Each time you get feedback, go on an adventure, sign up for a mentorship, or participate in any of our activities, you're helping other writers, too, because some of your dollars go to support writing and literacy charities.
Let us know and we'll put you in touch with organizations in need of your help.
If you represent a nonprofit literary or literacy group and would like to be considered as a future Partner in our August Sharing Program, please apply here:
“Be brave enough to live life creatively. The creative place is where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. You can't get there by bus, only by hard work and risk and by not quite knowing what you are doing. What you will discover will be wonderful. What you will discover will be yourself.”
~ Alan Alda
write well. do good.
We are an independent, mission-driven, forward-thinking, innovative social enterprise company, measuring success through a triple bottom line, considering economic, environmental, and social factors. As such we are socially responsible, always working to maximize our impact on society while minimizing our impact on our environment. We are an offshoot of an international literary company founded in 2000 to operate on behalf of authors in their negotiations with legitimate, mainstream publishers paying advances and royalties. In those years, as we worked quietly and confidentially, thousands of writers have been helped and significant time and money has been donated to dozens of writers groups and conferences.
Continuing in that spirit as a for-more-than-profit organization, an integral part of our work at augustwords.org is to partner with literary and literacy charities. Through our August Sharing Program we reinforce their work improving readers and writers on an international, regional, or local level. You can join us in this ongoing international effort. We feel we can accomplish so much more if we work with experienced Partners rather than just working alone. Each time you participate in any of our activities we donate to writing and literacy charities such as writers groups, conferences, libraries, schools, and reading programs. It's the august thing to do.
